Projects 2009

The main SSDC campaign in 2009:

Saving energy at home
A new group of Imtech employees, selected from various Imtech countries, is going to sink their teeth into the next SSDC campaign in South Africa. This time the project will focus on household energy use. Stichting Nova, a non-governmental development organisation, compares the energy use of households in three different social classes (rich, middle-class and poor). Based on their findings, they want to make a model of the way in which households can use energy more efficiently. If the model is successful, Nova wants to apply it large-scale. The Imtech team will play an important role in studying the technological aspects of energy use and also measuring energy use. Their challenge, in collaboration with local team members, is to develop a low-cost, efficient energy monitoring system that is accessible via internet. In addition, knowledge must also be transferred on how energy
savings can best be realised. A study into the possibilities for earning Carbon Credits also needs to be performed. Challenges abound!

Another 2009 SSDC campaign
Helping HIV-infected people to make fasionable flip-flops out of old tires
Imtech is also going to help to set up a small factory where HIV-infected people are making trendy designer flip-flops out of old tires called ’Ubuntu Plakkies’. The Imtech contribution is limited but important: how to make a safe technical and functional process (re)design with the highest quality and as many people as possible in relation to the used machinery and equipment.
